Tarsar Marsar Trek Kashmir — Twin Alpine Lakes in 6 Days

Tarsar Marsar Trek Kashmir

Twin glacial lakes at 3,800m — Kashmir’s most romantic alpine circuit

⏱ 6 Days
📍 Aru Valley, Pahalgam
🏔 3,800m max altitude
🎯 Moderate Difficulty
💰 From ₹18,000/person
📅 Jul — Oct
Why this trek? The Tarsar Marsar trek is the only Kashmir route that visits two glacial lakes on a single circuit. Tarsar Lake (deep cobalt blue) and Marsar Lake (emerald green) sit at 3,800m separated by a high meadow ridge. In July, both are partially frozen at the edges — creating an otherworldly ice-and-water landscape.

Overview

Starting from Aru Valley near Pahalgam, the Tarsar Marsar trek climbs steadily through dense pine forests and vast alpine meadows before revealing its star attraction — two strikingly different twin lakes separated by the Tarsar Pass. The route is a loop, so every day brings a completely different landscape.

The trek sits at a sweet spot of difficulty: challenging enough to feel like an achievement, accessible enough for fit beginners. See our Kashmir trek difficulty guide to understand grade ratings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Tarsar Marsar suitable for beginners?

Yes, with preparation. The maximum altitude of 3,900m at the pass is manageable for fit trekkers who have done the 8-week training plan. Previous trekking experience at lower altitudes is beneficial but not required for healthy, fit individuals.

What is the difference between Tarsar and Marsar lakes?

Tarsar Lake is deeper and larger, with a distinctive deep cobalt-blue colour from glacial meltwater. Marsar Lake is smaller and shallower with a green-turquoise hue. They sit about 3km apart separated by a meadow ridge and a small pass at 3,900m.

How does Tarsar Marsar compare to the Great Lakes Trek?

The Kashmir Great Lakes Trek is longer (8 days), higher (4,200m), and visits 6 lakes vs 2. Tarsar Marsar is a better choice for shorter holidays or trekkers doing their first high-altitude Kashmir trek.
