Overview
Bodhpathri (meaning “lotus leaf meadow” in Kashmiri) sits at around 3,300m above Gulmarg — but it feels like another world. The meadow is carpeted in wildflowers from June to August, surrounded by a natural amphitheatre of forested ridges, with views of Mount Apharwat and the main Himalayan range on clear days.
This is one of the few Kashmir treks that genuinely feels remote despite starting from a well-known hill station. Perfect for families, solo trekkers, and anyone doing their first Kashmir trek.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Trek Highlights
- Bodhpathri plateau — vast open meadow, zero crowds, complete silence broken only by wind and birdsong
- Wildflowers — extraordinary June–August bloom of blue iris, yellow buttercup, purple primula across the meadow floor
- Apharwat Peak views — the 4,200m peak above Gulmarg visible from the meadow ridge
- Gujjar shepherd camps — authentic pastoral culture; chance encounters with nomadic herders
- Forest birding — Himalayan monals (the state bird of Himachal Pradesh), Eurasian jay, and snow pigeons in the forest zone
Why Bodhpathri is Perfect for First-Timers
At 3,300m maximum altitude, Bodhpathri sits well within the manageable AMS risk range for most healthy adults. The terrain is gentle — no technical sections, no river crossings, no loose scree. Forest shade keeps temperatures comfortable even in mid-summer. It’s an ideal confidence-building trek before attempting the Tulian Lake Trek or Tarsar Marsar Trek.

FAQ
Can I do Bodhpathri as a day trek from Gulmarg?
It’s technically possible as a very long day hike (30km round trip) but not recommended. Camping at the meadow transforms the experience — the evening and early morning light over the wildflower plateau is the highlight of the trek.
Is Bodhpathri open in winter?
No — the meadow is snowbound from November to May/June. Gulmarg itself is a ski resort in winter, and Bodhpathri lies buried under several metres of snow. The trek operates June through October only.
How does this compare to Nafran Valley?
Both are meadow-focused treks. Nafran Valley is more remote and slightly harder; Bodhpathri is more accessible and ideal for shorter timelines. Bodhpathri for 3 days; Nafran for 5 days.
