We get this question often, and we want to answer it honestly rather than with generic reassurance. Kashmir can be an excellent destination for women trekking solo — with the right operator, the right route choice, and realistic expectations about local culture.
The Honest Safety Picture
The trekking zones of Kashmir — Pahalgam, Sonamarg, Yusmarg, Gurez — are rural mountain communities, not urban centres. The local population is predominantly Muslim with a conservative cultural framework. This affects expectations around dress and interaction, but it does not translate to danger for solo women travellers.
Multiple women trek solo with us every season. Our female trekkers report feeling safe on trail and at camp. The main safety consideration is the same as any remote trek: altitude, weather, and isolation — not personal safety from other people.
Best Routes for Solo Female Trekkers
Best Choice: Tulian Lake Trek
The Tulian Lake Trek starts from Pahalgam — one of the most visited trekking hubs in Kashmir with good infrastructure and a tourist-familiar population. Well-marked trails, manageable distances, and 4 days means you’re back in town before week’s end.
Excellent Choice: Gurez Valley Trek
The Gurez Valley Trek is remote but incredibly rewarding. The Dard-Shina people of Gurez have a reputation for hospitality and many women in our groups comment on how welcomed they felt in village interactions. Remoteness actually means fewer people on trail — a positive for many women.
For Experienced Female Trekkers: Great Lakes
The Great Lakes Trek attracts many solo female trekkers — it’s popular enough that you’ll often encounter other solo women in adjacent groups. The trail is well-established and our guides are experienced supporting all types of trekkers.
Practical Safety Tips
- Always trek with a registered operator: Self-guided solo trekking as a foreign or unfamiliar woman in remote Kashmir carries unnecessary risk — not from violence, but from navigation, altitude emergencies, and language barriers.
- Dress conservatively in villages: In transit through local villages, wearing full-length trousers and a loose upper layer is culturally appropriate and removes unwanted attention. On trail itself, wear what you’re comfortable and safe trekking in.
- Tell someone your itinerary: Share your day-by-day plans with someone at home. Our guides always know your emergency contacts.
- Trust your guide: Our guides are vetted, trained, and have led hundreds of treks. Communicate any discomfort openly — we take pastoral care of all trekkers seriously.
Gear Considerations for Women
- Women’s-specific hiking boots are worth the investment — fit is critical and men’s boots don’t accommodate women’s narrower heels and wider forefoot well
- Bring sufficient sanitary supplies for the trek duration — nothing is available on trail
- A lightweight travel towel is more useful than a full-size one
- Menstrual cup or disc is ideal for trekking — less waste, no disposal issues, lighter weight
What Our Female Trekkers Say
“As a solo female traveller from London, I was initially nervous. But my guide was professional and the whole experience felt completely safe. Gurez Valley was the most beautiful place I’ve ever been. I’m coming back for the Great Lakes next year.” — Sarah T., August 2024
“The trail etiquette from other trekkers was respectful and the local porters were polite and professional. I never felt uncomfortable. What struck me most was how safe the remote areas felt — more so than crowded tourist spots in other parts of India.” — Meera K., September 2024

- What is your emergency evacuation protocol?
- Do you have experience with solo female trekkers?
- Can I speak with a female trekker who has previously done this trek with you?
