Beginner’s Guide to Kashmir Trekking: Everything You Need to Know

Every experienced Kashmir trekker started exactly where you are now — excited, a little nervous, and full of questions. This guide answers the ones we hear most from first-timers before they book with us.

Is Kashmir Trekking Right for Me?

The honest answer: if you can walk for 4–6 hours at a moderate pace and you’re comfortable with basic camping conditions, Kashmir trekking is absolutely achievable. You don’t need to be an athlete. You don’t need previous Himalayan experience.

What you do need:

  • Basic cardiovascular fitness (able to walk uphill without stopping every few minutes)
  • Open mind about weather, basic food, and simple sleeping conditions
  • Commitment to the training plan 8 weeks before your trek
  • Respect for altitude — the mountain doesn’t care about your fitness level

Which Trek Should a First-Timer Choose?

This is the most important decision. Choose wrong and you’ll have a miserable experience. Choose right and you’ll be planning your next trek before you’re home.

Best First Kashmir Trek: Tulian Lake (4 Days)

The Tulian Lake Trek from Pahalgam is our most recommended first trek. Here’s why:

  • Manageable daily distances (8–12km)
  • Maximum altitude 3,700m — within manageable AMS risk range for most people
  • Well-marked trails with no technical sections
  • Beautiful destination — a frozen lake surrounded by mountains
  • Starts from Pahalgam, easily accessible from Srinagar

Good Second Trek: Nafran Valley or Gurez Valley

Once you’ve done Tulian Lake, the Nafran Valley Trek or Gurez Valley Trek are natural progressions. Slightly longer, slightly higher, more remote — but still very manageable with one trek under your belt.

For Fit First-Timers: Kashmir Great Lakes

If you’re already fit (regular exercise, some hiking experience at lower altitudes), the Great Lakes Trek is achievable on your first Kashmir trek. Communicate your experience honestly with us — we’ll assess your readiness.

What to Expect: Day-by-Day Reality

Day 1: Excitement + Mild Fatigue

You’ll be fresh and energized. The first day is usually shorter to allow acclimatisation. The scenery will be new and overwhelming. You’ll likely sleep well from the combination of altitude, fresh air, and physical exertion.

Day 2–3: The Adjustment Phase

Most first-timers hit a “wall” on Day 2 or 3. Legs are sore, backpack feels heavier than expected, and altitude may cause mild headaches. This is normal. Hydrate, slow your pace, and keep moving. It passes.

Day 4–5: Finding Your Rhythm

Something shifts around day 4. Your body adapts. The movement feels more natural. You stop noticing the weight of the pack. This is when trekking stops being an endurance test and becomes an experience.

Final Day: The High Point

Whether it’s reaching the alpine lake, summiting a pass, or arriving at the final camp with views you’ll remember for decades — the last day of a well-chosen first trek is transformative. Most first-timers finish wanting to know which trek to book next.

What Will My Camp Look Like?

On all Travel My Kashmir treks, you sleep in two-person dome tents (camping mattress and sleeping bag provided or carried). Camp facilities:

  • Tents: weatherproof, adequate for Kashmir summer temperatures
  • Meals: cooked by our camp cook — typical day includes porridge/eggs for breakfast, packed lunch, and hot dinner with dal, rice, vegetables, and roti
  • Toilets: portable camp toilet or designated latrine zones at established campsites
  • Washing: cold water washing at stream or camp bucket. No hot showers on trail (hot water bucket wash at most camps on request).
  • Charging: no charging on trail. Bring a 20,000mAh power bank.

Common Fears — Answered Honestly

“What if I’m too slow and hold the group back?”

Our guides set pace based on the slowest trekker in the group. We never leave anyone behind. This is standard practice, not a special accommodation. The group succeeds together.

“What if I get sick at altitude?”

We monitor everyone daily with pulse oximeters at camp. If you show signs of AMS that don’t resolve with rest, we arrange descent. Your guide will stay with you. Safety is always the absolute priority. See our complete altitude sickness guide.

“Is Kashmir safe for trekking?”

The trek routes we operate — Pahalgam, Sonamarg, Gurez, Yusmarg — have been continuously active for tourists for decades. Our guides monitor current conditions from local contacts daily. We have not cancelled a trek due to security concerns in our operational history. That said, we always monitor advisories and communicate transparently with all our booked trekkers.
